Matthew 6:19-21, “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”
Many will say that your greatest treasure is your children, others will say your salvation, some will say Jesus Christ is your greatest treasure. I don’t disagree of the importance as well as many other items we could include under this heading. But time is the one thing that once it is gone you can never get it back and it seems that the devil has seen fit to make sure we are so busy that we have little time for God, family, and relaxation! Statistics show that a great part of our day is used up by our work, some ten hours plus if you include getting ready, traveling and the actual hours you work. We sleep on average a little under eight hours so we already have 3/4 of our day used up. They say the average person watches TV two and a half hours and spends two more hours on social media. That leaves us about an hour and a half to prepare meals, eat, exercise, go to the kids games and so on. No wonder we are tired, frustrated, and feel or lives are going no where.
Ephesians 5:16, “Redeeming the time, because the days are evil” I think most, if not all of us would say the day we are living is “evil”, we have mothers killing their own babies, in the womb and also out of it, children killing their parents, the word terrorist has echoed in every ones ears and so on, we don’t want to watch the news or read the newspaper because of all the evil it speaks of.
Time is one of our greatest treasures and we need to realize that it is a gift from God. We spend so much time to obtain the American dream that we have so little time to enjoy it. We need to invest it not so much in material things that will rust, be devoured, and be stolen. But we need to invest our time in God, our spouses, children, our parents, brother and sisters, the family of God and our friends. The devil wants to steal everything from us and this includes what I consider our greatest treasure our time. I end with a poem that has no author called “No Time”.
I knelt to pray but not for long,
I had too much to do.
I had to hurry and get to work
For bills would soon be due.
So I knelt and said a hurried prayer,
And jumped up off my knees.
My Christian duty was now done
My soul could rest at ease.
All day long I had no time
To spread a word of cheer.
No time to speak of Christ to friends,
They’d laugh at me I’d fear.
No time, no time, too much to do,
That was my constant cry,
No time to give to souls in need
But at last the time, the time to die.
I went before the Lord,
I came, I stood with downcast eyes.
For in his hands God held a book;
It was the book of life.
God looked into his book and said
“Your name I cannot find.
I once was going to write it down…
But never found the time”
