As we entire into this next week there will be discussion on what happened some 25 years ago, who here remembers where they were when you first heard the announcement of one of the planes hitting the first tower in New York?
Unfortunately, we have a generation of young people that were not born or remember what that day, a little over 98.2 million people have been born after that tragic day. They say our long-term memory doesn’t really begin at the ages 4-5 years of age. So, add to that another 15 million or so and we have over 110 million people that have no witness to that day other than what they have been told or seen on various documentaries.
We have over the last century have erected what are called memorials to help us to be able to recount history, we of course have the 911 or Twin Towers memorial reminding us of the 2983 people who perished that day. I’m glad they still gather and repeat the names of everyone of the victims of that day and sadly more have died since of various cancers and lung diseases as result of the dust that coated everything that day.
I hope you agree that is imperative that we remember these events in our nation’s history as well as understanding the history that we find in the word of God.
Psa 105:5, “Remember his marvellous works that he hath done; his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth;”
Psa 106:13, “They soon forgat his works; they waited not for his counsel:”
Unfortunately, even though we still go through the steps of remembering what happened on 911 we seem to have completely forgotten the why.
I’m not one to sugar coat things in fact the Holy Ghost in me will not permit it, the faith Muslim faith is incompatible with our Christian faith and also incompatible with the Constitution of these United States of America. In our country according CAIR there are a total of 255 Muslims elected mostly in local government positions but eleven have become mayors in our country.
In attempts to ease tensions between Christian and Muslim faith in this country we have what is called interfaith dialogue sometimes called Chrislam. Does anyone here have issues with that?
1Jn 2:22, “Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.”
The Israelites often had memorials built so that they would not forget what God had done for them, the twelve stones in the Jordan river, Jacobs pillar at Bethel, the Stone of Ebenezer, and of course that Passover all are meant to remind the Israelites of Gods deliverance.
If you look at the wars in the 20th centuries we have many places to go to help us to remember the horrors of war, you have WW1 were 116,516 Americans died but we have zero veterans from that war, WW2 you hade 405,399+ die with 16.4 million American servicemen, we have approximately 31,000 still living but we have memorials in Washington to acknowledge the sacrifice of those young men and women. You have the Korean war where you might be surprised to hear 36,574 Americans were killed out of 1.8 million involved with 300,000 to 450,000 still surviving, you can find a memorial south of the Lincoln memorial. The Vietnam memorial were 2,7 million soldiers fought with 58,600 killed and about 610,000 alive today.
George Santayana in “the Life of Reason” came up with this often repeated quote, “Those who cannot remember the past are doomed to repeat it”
Why is it that we mere humans seem to easily forget things in a relatively short time? 2027 is fast approaching and many will make new years resolutions that will be broken in the very first month.
Num 23:19, “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?”
Lets look at Psalms 103 at the benefits God has for us,
Psa 103:2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:
Psa 103:3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;
Psa 103:4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;
Psa 103:5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
Psa 103:6 The LORD executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed.
Psa 103:7 He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel.
Psa 103:8 The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.
Psa 103:9 He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever.
Psa 103:10 He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.
Psa 103:11 For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.
Psa 103:12 As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.
Psa 103:13 Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.
Psa 103:14 For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.
Psa 103:15 As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth.
Psa 103:16 For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.
Psa 103:17 But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children’s children;
Psa 103:18 To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them.
Psa 103:19 The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all.
Psa 103:20 Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.
Psa 103:21 Bless ye the LORD, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure.
Psa 103:22 Bless the LORD, all his works in all places of his dominion: bless the LORD, O my soul.
Heb 10:15-16, “Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;”
We need to remember that God has promised to never leave nor forsake us and we need to also remember past events not to have those horrible feelings of the death and destruction that happened during those times, but to celebrate those that sacrificed so much on those days, the feeling of unity we had…
Also to remember the warnings that lead up to those days…
Remember we promised to “Never Forget!”
