What is Truth?

Truth-1

By Pastor Jeff,

As Jesus stood before Pontius Pilate, during questioning Jesus replies with this statement found in John 18:36-38, “Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.”

That question, “What is truth?” has echoed throughout the ages and it seems in our day of what you can only call questionable news has us asking this question daily. Even the fact checking sites have also become questionable sources of information as they are overseen by people with bias’s one way or the other. Jesus himself was not sentenced as result of truth but as a way to satisfy the crowds that were demanding it.

Truth should not be determined by what makes people feel good, what the majority decide, by good intentions, or even the fact that it is believed by those expressing it. Galatians 1:6-9, tells us, “I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.”  It’s relatively easy to get caught up in lie if you do not adhere to Proverbs 23:23, “Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.”

Truth is not subjective, it either is or isn’t the truth and that any attempt to distort, falsely interpret the word of God to make one feel good is a lie. this includes abortion, gay marriage, adultery or even who Jesus is. Jesus makes no qualm about claiming that He was God in the flesh, John 14:5-7, “Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.” (John 5:58, 1 Timothy 3:16 and so on)

The real question is how much truth can we know? John 16:12-13 gives us the answer, “I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.” Now this does not mean we will know everything, but if we take the time to read, study, pray,  and seek God for answers we will without a doubt get to the truth!
